KYIV — Russian drones killed a three-year-old boy and his grandparents in a village in the Kyiv region, while a separate ballistic missile attack killed another person in the capital, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Saturday.
The child and his grandparents were killed when a house in Puhivka, about 30 km (19 miles) from Kyiv, caught fire after a Russian drone strike, Zelenskiy said. The boy’s parents, 15-year-old brother and a neighbour were wounded.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv regional administration, said strikes hit three locations in the Brovary district near the capital, damaging 10 private homes as well as commercial and production facilities.
In Kyiv, fires broke out in three districts and commercial premises and warehouses were damaged, officials said. Reuters witnesses heard several powerful explosions in the centre of the city.
The Ukrainian air force said Russia launched six ballistic missiles and 151 drones at Ukraine overnight. Ukrainian air defences shot down 135 drones but did not intercept the ballistic missiles, it said.
Both Russia and Ukraine deny deliberately targeting civilians.
The overnight strikes came as Ukraine faces shortages of air-defence missiles for U.S.-made Patriot systems. Ukraine’s defence ministry said only 29 of 195 ballistic missiles launched against the country were intercepted in July.
The casualty figures and damage assessments remain subject to further updates as emergency services continue work at the affected sites.
