BELGRADE — Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Saturday he will resign within weeks, paving the way for early presidential and parliamentary elections.
Vucic made the announcement at a rally of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party in downtown Belgrade. Both sets of elections had been scheduled for next year.
“I will be president for only a couple of weeks, and then I will resign,” Vucic told supporters, according to multiple news agencies reporting from the event.
The move comes after months of anti-government protests, including student-led demonstrations that have challenged Vucic’s long hold on power. Authorities have not released further details on the exact timing of his resignation or the elections.
Vucic, whose second and final presidential mandate was set to expire in 2027, did not provide additional specifics on the resignation process or transition arrangements in his public remarks. Government officials have not issued separate statements on the announcement.
