BERLIN — A severe heatwave that shattered temperature records across western Europe this week is shifting eastward, bringing extreme conditions to central parts of the continent, authorities said on Sunday.

Temperatures have exceeded seasonal averages by 5-12 degrees Celsius in many areas, with multiple countries recording their hottest June days on file. France broke its national daily temperature record on June 24, while the United Kingdom saw successive June highs, and Spain registered its hottest June days on record.

The World Meteorological Organization said the heatwave, initially affecting the Iberian Peninsula and western Europe, is now progressing toward central and southern regions, including Germany, Poland and the Balkans.

Health authorities have reported heat-related deaths, with Spain attributing more than 200 fatalities to the extreme temperatures in recent days, according to official statistical models. France and Italy have also recorded multiple heat-related deaths, officials said. Emergency services reported increased medical calls, school disruptions and infrastructure strain, including buckled roads and rail tracks.

European early warning systems remain in place for high temperatures in affected areas. Officials have advised vulnerable populations to take precautions amid ongoing high heat.

The situation is developing, with forecasters monitoring the eastward movement of the high-pressure system. Further updates on impacts and response measures are expected from national meteorological services in the coming days.
