DOHA — Indirect talks between the United States and Iran in Doha made positive progress on implementing a June cease-fire agreement, Qatari mediators said on Wednesday.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said mediators from Qatar and Pakistan held separate meetings with U.S. and Iranian negotiators, reporting advances on issues related to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding signed on June 17.
The discussions focused on maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and other elements of the interim deal that halted active hostilities, sources familiar with the talks said.
U.S. President Donald Trump described the meetings as “very good” and said progress was being made toward limits on Iran’s nuclear program.
The next round of talks is expected after funeral proceedings for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, al-Ansari said.
No direct meetings between U.S. and Iranian officials took place, Iranian officials and Qatari mediators confirmed. The discussions remained at a technical level through intermediaries.
The June 17 memorandum paused months of conflict that included U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Oil flows through the strategic waterway have since returned toward pre-war levels.
Details of any agreements reached in Doha remained limited as of Wednesday evening, with both sides indicating further discussions would follow.
The talks come amid ongoing efforts to secure a more durable arrangement addressing Iran’s nuclear activities, sanctions relief and regional de-escalation.
