PRISTINA — Kosovo's parliament suspended a session on Saturday after opposition lawmaker Time Kadrijaj threw eggs at caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti, disrupting proceedings as political divisions continued to prevent the formation of functioning state institutions.
Kadrijaj, an MP from the opposition Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), threw eggs toward Kurti during a plenary session convened as lawmakers sought to advance the process of constituting the new parliament. Security personnel moved to protect the prime minister and the session was suspended, according to reports from the parliament and news footage.
Kurti appeared to remain at the session and said that if having eggs thrown at him was the price of political dialogue, he was prepared to pay it, according to the Agence France-Presse report.
The incident came amid a prolonged political crisis following Kosovo's June 7 parliamentary election, the country's third national election in about 18 months. Kurti's Vetevendosje party won the largest share of the vote but failed to secure a parliamentary majority, leaving it dependent on other parties to establish institutions.
The election produced 53 seats for Vetevendosje in the 120-member Assembly, according to election results cited by regional reports. The Democratic Party of Kosovo won 22 seats and the Democratic League of Kosovo 18, leaving Kurti short of the 61 votes needed for a simple majority.
The political deadlock has also complicated the election of a new president, which requires a two-thirds parliamentary majority. Kurti has held consultations with opposition leaders as he seeks an agreement on the formation of institutions and the presidency.
Kadrijaj has previously criticized Kurti over the negotiations, saying in July that AAK could provide the quorum needed for a presidential vote if the government met conditions set by the party.
Kosovo has faced repeated institutional paralysis since inconclusive elections in 2025. The latest election was intended to break the impasse, but the absence of a governing majority has again raised the prospect of further political uncertainty and another election.
The parliamentary session was suspended after Saturday's confrontation, with no immediate confirmation of when proceedings would resume.
