AMMAN — The United States launched a fresh wave of airstrikes against targets in Iran after the U.S. military announced that another American service member had been killed, bringing the number of confirmed U.S. troop deaths in recent days higher following Iranian retaliatory attacks, according to U.S. Central Command.
CENTCOM said the latest strikes targeted Iranian military infrastructure, including coastal surveillance, air defense, maritime, missile and drone-related facilities. The command said the operation was ordered to degrade Iran's military capabilities and followed attacks that killed U.S. service members and targeted American forces in the region.
The military said a U.S. service member was killed during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone in Iraq. CENTCOM also said personnel recovered unidentified remains at a base in Jordan where two U.S. service members were killed in an earlier Iranian strike, adding that identification procedures were continuing.
U.S. officials have not released the identities of the latest casualties. Iranian authorities have reported damage from the strikes, but independent verification of casualty figures or the full extent of the damage was not immediately available.
The renewed exchanges come after ceasefire efforts collapsed, with both sides carrying out repeated military operations across the region. The fighting has also raised concerns over security in key Gulf shipping routes and prompted heightened alert levels among U.S. allies hosting American forces.
