ADEN — Yemen’s armed forces said on Saturday they had launched a military operation against Houthi targets and military equipment across several front lines, escalating fighting after a series of Houthi attacks in the provinces of Marib and Hadramawt.
Yemeni military spokesman Colonel Majed al-Nuzaili said the operation targeted Houthi forces, military capabilities and fighters along multiple fronts. He said the action was carried out in response to attacks that had caused military and civilian casualties, according to the Yemeni army and reports by Anadolu Agency.
The military did not provide a detailed breakdown of the targets struck or give an independently verified account of casualties resulting from the operation. Houthi authorities had not, in the sources reviewed, provided a detailed response to the latest government offensive.
The operation follows a sharp increase in violence in recent days. Yemen’s armed forces have accused the Houthis of attacks on military camps in Marib and Hadramawt. The army said its latest operation was conducted along several contact lines and described it as a response to repeated attacks.
Separately, Yemen’s military said the Houthis had launched missiles from Taiz province toward the Red Sea, according to a statement from the Defense Ministry-affiliated Taiz Military Axis. The claim could not be independently verified from the available reports.
The renewed fighting marks a significant deterioration after years of relative calm along many of Yemen’s front lines following a U.N.-brokered truce that began in April 2022. The truce formally expired later that year, but large-scale ground fighting between the internationally recognized government and the Iran-aligned Houthis remained limited for an extended period.
The latest escalation has centered partly on Marib, a strategic province that contains important oil and gas resources. Local officials and military sources have reported deadly Houthi attacks there in recent days, while the Houthis have continued to accuse government forces and their allies of attacks against areas under their control.
Yemen’s army said it remained prepared to respond to further Houthi attacks and would take additional military measures as directed by the country’s political and military leadership.
