SAN FRANCISCO—OpenAI said it is rolling out unlimited text conversations for ChatGPT Free users, removing the existing cap on standard text chats while keeping usage limits in place for images, file uploads and certain other features as the artificial intelligence company broadens access to its latest consumer models.
The change, announced on Aug. 7, comes alongside the introduction of GPT-5.6 Luna as the default model for Free and ChatGPT Go users. OpenAI said the rollout will begin immediately, with the expanded access becoming available to users over the following week, depending on region and account.
The company also introduced a new "Think" button for Free and Go users, allowing the chatbot to spend more time reasoning through complex prompts before generating a response. OpenAI said the feature is intended to improve answers to more difficult questions while preserving the faster response times expected for routine conversations.
Despite the removal of limits on ordinary text chats, OpenAI said restrictions will remain for tools that consume more computing resources, including image generation, file analysis and uploads. The company did not announce changes to those quotas as part of the update.
The announcement also included updates for paying subscribers. OpenAI said ChatGPT Plus and Pro users will receive an improved GPT-5.6 Sol model designed to provide more accurate and concise responses, particularly for prompts involving dates, numerical information, rules and cited sources. The company said those subscribers will also gain access to a new control allowing them to adjust how much reasoning the model applies before answering.
The latest changes mark another expansion of OpenAI's consumer offerings as competition intensifies among AI developers seeking to attract and retain users with increasingly capable language models. Rivals including Google, Anthropic and several Chinese AI firms have continued to introduce new models and pricing strategies, increasing pressure across the sector.
OpenAI said the rollout of unlimited text chats and GPT-5.6 Luna for Free and Go users will continue over the coming days, while the updated GPT-5.6 Sol model and new reasoning controls for Plus and Pro subscribers are also being deployed in stages.
