CHICAGO — Healthcare systems are increasingly adopting cloud-based platforms to manage enterprise imaging, as hospitals and clinics seek to consolidate medical images, improve data access and support growing digital health operations, according to healthcare technology companies and industry organizations.

The shift has accelerated in 2026 as providers evaluate alternatives to traditional on-premises imaging infrastructure, which has long been used to store and distribute radiology, cardiology and other diagnostic images. Industry participants said cloud deployments are being used to support image storage, data sharing and workflow management across multiple care settings.

At the HIMSS Global Health Conference earlier this year, several healthcare technology vendors highlighted cloud-based enterprise imaging offerings, reflecting broader efforts by health systems to modernize information technology environments and improve interoperability between clinical departments.

GE HealthCare said in an April statement that it had expanded access to cloud-enabled enterprise imaging software through Amazon Web Services Marketplace. “We are committed to delivering enterprise imaging solutions with our cloud strategy,” Scott Miller, chief executive of Solutions for Enterprise Imaging at GE HealthCare, said in the statement. The company said the move was intended to provide hospitals and health systems with additional options for adopting cloud-based imaging tools.

Healthcare providers and vendors have cited several reasons for the transition, including the need to manage increasing volumes of imaging data, support remote access to clinical information and reduce the complexity of maintaining separate imaging archives. Industry presentations at HIMSS 2026 also emphasized scalability, operational resilience and phased migration strategies as organizations move imaging workloads to cloud environments.

Technology companies have continued to introduce new products and partnerships tied to cloud-based imaging. AGFA HealthCare, Sectra and other vendors have promoted cloud-ready enterprise imaging platforms and tools designed to integrate imaging data with emerging artificial intelligence applications and clinical workflows.

Healthcare organizations have also stressed the importance of cybersecurity, regulatory compliance and data governance as imaging systems are migrated to cloud infrastructure. Industry officials said implementation approaches vary by institution, with some providers choosing hybrid models that combine cloud services with existing on-site systems.
