TOKYO — Nintendo Co. has asked suppliers to ramp up production of its Switch 2 console, targeting as many as 25 million units by the end of its fiscal year in March 2026, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Japanese videogame company is seeking to increase output from manufacturing partners to meet anticipated demand during the holiday season and into 2026, the sources said. The plan, reported by Bloomberg in October 2025, positions Nintendo for what would be record first-year sales for a new console.

Nintendo launched the Switch 2 in June 2025. The successor to the original Switch, which sold more than 140 million units over its lifetime, features enhanced hardware including a larger screen and improved performance. The company has not publicly detailed exact production targets.

By early May 2026, Nintendo reported that Switch 2 sell-through had reached approximately 19.9 million units in its launch fiscal year, exceeding initial guidance. In its financial results for the year ended March 31, 2026, the company forecasted 16.5 million units for the current fiscal year ending March 2027.

“Nintendo has asked its manufacturing partners to ramp up output,” Bloomberg reported, citing the unnamed sources. Details on current production capacity and specific suppliers remain unclear.

The strategy reflects Nintendo’s efforts to capitalize on strong initial interest in the hybrid console while navigating supply chain considerations. Earlier reports indicated production adjustments, including a reduction in planned output for a quarter in early 2026 following softer-than-expected holiday sales in some markets, particularly the United States.

Nintendo has not commented publicly on the specific 25 million unit target. The company typically provides sales guidance during quarterly earnings briefings.

Analysts have noted the Switch 2’s launch performance as one of the strongest in the industry, though comparisons to the original Switch’s trajectory remain ongoing. The console continues to receive software support, with multiple titles scheduled for release in 2026.

As of May 2026, Nintendo’s focus remains on expanding the Switch 2 installed base through both hardware availability and new games. The company has raised prices on the console in some regions amid rising component costs.

Production plans for the remainder of the current fiscal year are subject to demand and market conditions. Nintendo has a history of adjusting manufacturing based on real-time sales data.
