ARNHEM, Netherlands—More than 1,000 speedcubers from over 50 countries gathered in the Dutch city of Arnhem this week for the Rubik's WCA European Championship 2026, underscoring the continued global growth of competitive Rubik's Cube solving under standardized international rules.
The four-day championship, held from July 16 to July 19 at Sportcentrum Valkenhuizen, is organized under the regulations of the World Cube Association (WCA), the governing body for official speedcubing competitions. Organizers said competitors are taking part in a range of events that include the traditional 3x3x3 cube, one-handed solving, blindfolded disciplines and larger cube categories.
According to event information published by the WCA, the championship attracted participants from 53 countries, making it one of the largest speedcubing competitions held in Europe. Competitors range from children attending their first major international event to experienced cubers with world-class rankings.
The WCA oversees official competitions worldwide through a volunteer-based network of delegates and organizers. Under its regulations, competitors receive a limited inspection period before attempting to solve scrambled puzzles as quickly as possible, with results recorded under standardized judging procedures.
The championship also highlights the expanding international reach of speedcubing beyond Europe. WCA competition listings show official events taking place across Asia, the Americas and other regions throughout the year, reflecting sustained participation from both established and emerging cubing communities. Recent competitions have included events in Indonesia and numerous other countries.
Industry observers say improvements in cube design, including magnetic alignment systems and other mechanical refinements, have contributed to faster solving times over the past decade. At the same time, online tutorials, training software and global rankings have helped broaden access to the sport while allowing competitors to compare performances internationally.
Beyond elite competition, organizers describe speedcubing as a community activity in which participants frequently serve as judges, scramblers and volunteers during events, helping competitions operate under WCA procedures. Vendors at major championships also showcase specialized cubes and accessories designed for competitive use.
Competition results from the European Championship were scheduled to be finalized after Sunday's concluding rounds, with official standings and records to be published by the World Cube Association following verification under its competition rules.
